GTA 6 Collector's Edition: Is It Worth Paying $400?
I decided to do a comprehensive analysis of everything that comes in this $400 box. Spoiler: the game is not included.
Rockstar has officially announced the GTA 6 collector's edition, and as a long-time fan of the series, I decided to do a comprehensive analysis of everything that comes in this $400 box. Spoiler: the game is not included.
In recent years, we've seen increasingly creative (and expensive) collector's editions from AAA games. Death Stranding, Elden Ring, and The Last of Us Part 2 have set new quality standards. So the question everyone is asking is: Did Rockstar manage to keep up with this trend with GTA 6?
After analyzing each item individually and comparing it with other editions on the market, I discovered some uncomfortable truths about this $400 collection.
What's Inside the Box?
The GTA 6 collector's edition comes in a black box with a drawer-style format, with two levels of compartments. The presentation is sophisticated, but does the content justify the price?
Here are the 11 items included:
1. Macaw Statue (Alligator)
This is the standout item of the collection. Rockstar created a stylized Macaw statue — an alligator holding a Martini glass, with a flamingo and a special cigarette, wearing a floral shirt.
Analysis: If you don't know GTA 6 yet, this statue means nothing to you. The Macaw apparently is a character from the fictional TV series of Leonida (the state where the game takes place), but without knowing the narrative, it's just a curious statue of a drunk alligator.
The base is rotating, which is a nice touch. However, there are reports that the statue is already being pirated with 3D printers on sites like Shopee — a sign that the price doesn't reflect the item's actual value.
2. New Era Snapback Cap 940
A casual cap from the New Era brand. The 940 line is known for being more casual and laid-back.
Analysis: It's a nice cap, but questionable for a collector's edition. Do you really want to keep a new cap in your collection instead of wearing it? Collector's editions are meant to preserve, not to wear out in everyday use.
3. Oakley Vice City Sunglasses
The glasses have "Vice City" engraved on the lenses and "GTA VI" on the frame.
Analysis: This is one of the best items in the collection. Unlike the cap, the glasses are versatile enough to wear daily but special enough to be part of a collection. Oakley's quality is well-recognized, and the design is subtle yet recognizable.
4. Crossbody Bag
A fanny pack in a streetwear/tourist style.
Analysis: Vice City is based on Miami, a tourist city. The bag makes thematic sense, but it's unlikely anyone wants to walk around with a GTA 6 fanny pack. It feels more like a souvenir shop item.
5. Magnetic Mirror with Macaw
A small mirror with the Macaw's image.
Analysis: Here things get questionable. A refrigerator mirror? This is the kind of thing you buy at a street market stall. For a collector's edition, it's really surreal.
6. Razor Blade Keychain
A stylized keychain with the GTA VI and Vice City logo.
Analysis: Actually, this is one of the most creative items. The design is cool and functional.
7. Bar Spoon
A long-handled spoon used for stirring drinks in cocktail shakers.
Analysis: Cool for bartending fans. It has the Vice City logo engraved. But again, it's an everyday item rather than a true collectible.
8. Shot Glass
A glass shot glass.
Analysis: Together with the bar spoon, it forms a bartending kit. However, the same criticism applies — it's functional, not a collectible.
9. Stickers
A set of stickers in the style you'd buy at a stationery store.
Analysis: If all the other items were excellent, the stickers would go unnoticed. But when combined with other weak items, they only reinforce the feeling that this is a generic collection.
10. Dual-Sided Poster with Leonida Map
A poster showing the map of the fictional city of Leonida on the back.
Analysis: This is one of the items with the most potential. In the physical editions of GTA IV and GTA V, the posters were amazing — with character art on one side and the map on the other. It was great to hang in your room. However, in this edition, the poster is just a dual-sided piece without the same visual impact of previous generations.
11. Leonida Keys Enamel Pins
A set of pins in a metal tin.
Analysis: Pins can be cool, but they're minor items. In a $400 collection, we'd expect something more impactful.
The Elephant in the Room: The Game Is NOT Included
This is the big problem. The collector's edition costs $400 and does not include the game.
Typically, collector's editions come with the game — and sometimes charge even more for it. Rockstar broke this tradition, forcing buyers to purchase the game separately.
This means that to have the "complete" GTA 6 experience with the collector's edition, you need to spend:
- $400 → Collector's edition
- $60-70 → Base game (or more for Ultimate version)
- Potentially more → Vinyl album, future DLC, etc.
Rockstar already made $7 billion from GTA 6 pre-sales in the first quarter. This decision not to include the game is purely capitalist.
Comparison with Other Collector's Editions
To put things in perspective, I analyzed other AAA game collector's editions released recently:
Death Stranding Collector's Edition
The BB baby statue is iconically linked to the game. Even people who haven't played Death Stranding recognize this element. The box is beautifully crafted, includes a customizable steelbook with the original soundtrack, and — crucially — comes with the game.
Verdict: Far superior to the GTA 6 edition.
Elden Ring Collector's Edition
Melania is an iconic character in the game (one of the hardest bosses). The statue is a quality action figure. The box is elaborate and beautiful. And comes with the game for Xbox or PlayStation.
Even without knowing Elden Ring before purchasing, you know you've invested in something valuable.
Verdict: Much better than GTA 6.
Fallout 4 Collector's Edition
The Pip-Boy is the most iconic item in the Fallout series — it appears in practically every game. Rockstar should have included something equivalent in GTA 6, something as central to the series as the Pip-Boy is to Fallout.
In fact, I saw sellers offering glowing, rotating replicas of the GTA icon for R$2,200 on Mercado Livre — something that would have much more connection with fans than the Macaw statue.
And of course: comes with the game.
Verdict: Better than GTA 6.
The Last of Us Part 2 Collector's Edition
Another edition that set high standards in quality and detail.
Verdict: Well above GTA 6.
The Verdict: It's a Press Kit Disguised as a Collector's Edition
After analyzing each item, my conclusion is honest: Rockstar was lazy.
The edition seems assembled from a press kit — the kind of material Rockstar used to distribute to YouTubers and journalists at game launches. Everyday items (cap, fanny pack, shot glass, spoon) mixed with collectibles (statue, poster).
There's no cohesion. There's no central item that defines the collection like Elden Ring's action figures or Fallout's Pip-Boy.
The Problems:
- Lack of focus: The collection tries to be everything (functional + collectible) and ends up being neither
- Generic items: Many items could be bought separately at any store
- No game: Forces the buyer to spend an additional $60+
- Piracy: The statue is already being reproduced in 3D, suggesting the price doesn't reflect its value
- No identity: Without knowing GTA 6, half the items don't make sense
Who Is It Worth It For?
Despite my criticisms, this edition might make sense for:
- Hardcore GTA fans who want everything related to the series
- Collectors who already have all other GTA editions
- People in the US (since it's not available for sale in Brazil, requiring imports)
But for most people? Save your money. Get a high-resolution GTA 6 poster online, buy a regular Oakley glasses, and save the $400 for the game itself.
Final Thoughts
Rockstar is an incredibly creative company with the capacity to produce amazing collectibles. The GTA series deserved a collector's edition on par with Elden Ring or Death Stranding.
Unfortunately, this isn't it. It's a press kit bundled together and sold as premium.
Will this article age poorly? Maybe when the game comes out and we discover that the Macaw is actually a central character of epic importance? I doubt it, but let's see.
