GTA 6: Giant Map, Hurricanes, 170 Animal Species and Everything Rockstar Revealed About Leonida
Map twice the size of GTA 5, 170+ animal species, hurricanes and dozens of activities. See what Rockstar revealed about Leonida.
It's coming
Rockstar Games has finally opened up about the open world of GTA 6. In a 14-page feature published by Game Informer, the studio detailed how it turned Florida into the fictional state of Leonida, and showed 12 brand-new screenshots that accompany digital issue 382 of the magazine.
The material answers questions the community has been asking for years: how big is the map? Will the weather really be dynamic? What is there to do besides missions? And above all, will the world feel alive? In this article, I gather the main points of the reveal and comment on what each one may mean for those who will play starting November 19th, 2026.
A Map Twice as Big as GTA 5's
According to Game Informer, Leonida is the largest open world Rockstar has ever created, with an area roughly twice that of GTA 5. But size alone has never been what sets the studio's games apart. What stands out is the promise of combining that scale with high content density and hand-built, hand-tuned settings.
Rockstar says it took care of more than just the main neighborhoods. Rooftops, alleys, interiors and the spaces between the big regions also received attention, precisely to avoid the "no man's land" feeling that shows up in many large maps, where certain areas only serve as a link between one city and another.
Another important point is the amount of interior spaces. Buildings were designed to keep consistency between the facade and what lies inside, reinforcing the impression that you are entering real structures rather than stage-set fronts.
The six regions presented
So far, Rockstar has shown six regions of Leonida:
- Vice City: the metropolis, inspired by Miami
- Leonida Keys: beaches and archipelagos
- Grassrivers: swamps and shallow waters, inspired by the Everglades
- Port Gellhorn: an industrial-style city
- Ambrosia: another urban area of the state
- Mount Kalaga National Park: a mountainous region
Together they cover practically the entire visual repertoire of Florida: big city, coastline, swamp, industry and nature.
Activities: Far Beyond Missions
The report confirms an extensive list of activities spread across the map. Some work as minigames, others are tied to exploration, to the dates between Jason and Lucia, or to the means of transportation in each region.
Among the activities shown or mentioned:
- Pool (billiards)
- Mini golf
- Zoo visits
- Snorkeling
- Scuba diving
- Airboat rides
- Basketball
- Gym and weightlifting
- Fishing
- Hunting
- Kayaking
- Street and circuit races
- Motocross
- Jet ski
- Skydiving and BASE jumping
- Underground fights
- Shooting ranges
- Bars, nightclubs and strip clubs
Two details deserve a highlight. The zoo can be used as a date option for Jason and Lucia, which gives the protagonist couple moments away from crime. The airboats, meanwhile, will let you cross the shallow, vegetation-filled waters of Grassrivers, one of the most characteristic landscapes of Florida.
The list is reminiscent of what Rockstar did in Red Dead Redemption 2: small activities that aren't the focus of the story, but that make the world worth exploring even when you're not following the main mission.
Wildlife: More Than 170 Species
This might be the figure that surprises the most. GTA 6 will have more than 170 animal species across land, water and sky, including creatures native to Leonida that have never appeared in a Rockstar game.
The key numbers:
- More than 60 bird species
- More than 30 land mammals
- Fish, reptiles and other forms of life
- Confirmed animals: manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators
- In the sea: different species of sharks, whales, stingrays, turtles and jellyfish
Each marine group will have its own movement patterns, which should make dives and boat trips noticeably different from one another.
Note: the original article uses "more than 160" in the headline and "more than 170" in the body text. I went with the number in the body of the report. It's worth checking the Game Informer issue for the official count.
Technology inherited from Red Dead Redemption 2
The technical foundation of the fauna came from what was developed for RDR2, with improvements. Animals will be able to display iridescence, bioluminescence, transparency, different types of feathers and a more advanced fur system.
Fur and coats will react to the environment: dirt, moisture, clumped strands and color variations. In practice, you'll be able to notice the difference when an animal comes out of the water or crosses a muddy area. It's this kind of detail that makes a world feel believable.
NPCs: The Most Diverse Population Rockstar Has Ever Made
Leonida will have the most varied population the studio has ever produced. Pedestrians will differ in height, age, muscle mass and fat distribution, without relying only on stretched or shrunk models.
Variations will be able to appear independently in different parts of the body, such as chest, belly, hips and buttocks. This way, two characters with the same weight don't need to have exactly the same shape.
Other details mentioned:
- Skin with freckles, moles and different levels of tan
- More hair and body hair styles, including ethnic styles
- Clothes, hairstyles and grooming that change according to the community or region
- Special attention to tattoos, aiming for styles that are culturally consistent with each group
Rockstar says a team at the studio in Los Angeles worked almost exclusively on pedestrians and on the technology used to generate this diversity. It's a huge investment in something players often only notice when it's missing: the crowd stops looking like a group of clones.
Weather: Localized Phenomena and Hurricanes
The weather system was reworked so that each phenomenon is more localized and persistent. Instead of applying rain, wind or clouds uniformly across the whole map, conditions will be able to vary from one region to another.
What has been detailed so far:
- Sea breezes after sunset
- Simulation of rising air currents
- Changes in wind direction caused by buildings
- Intense storms, with dense clouds, strong winds, lightning, thunder and heavy rain
- Water running down roofs, poles and other surfaces
- Vegetation that reacts to gusts
- Hurricanes, consistent with the Florida setting
Imagine being in Vice City under a blazing sun while, a few kilometers away, a storm pounds the swamps of Grassrivers. That kind of contrast is what the new system promises.
Field Research in Florida
To build Leonida, Rockstar sent teams to Florida to photograph locations, drive through different regions and capture details that are hard to reproduce from internet images alone.
The research also included conversations with residents, former criminals, police officers, party promoters, arms dealers, artists and people connected to Miami's legal and underground economies. Many of the stories collected helped shape characters, communities and situations that appear in the game.
The 12 new images reinforce this approach, showing inhabitants with different heights, bodies, clothes and physical features, as well as new landscapes of Vice City and other areas of the state.
Release Date and Platforms
Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives on November 19th, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. So far, Rockstar has not announced a PC version.
My Take
After seeing the collector's edition, which left me skeptical this gameplay and world material got me a lot more excited. Rockstar has historically shined in exactly these details: the weather that changes, the fauna that reacts, the population that looks like real people.
Two points to keep an eye on:
- Density versus size: a map twice as big is only worth it if it's filled with relevant content. The promise is good, but only the final game will confirm it.
- No PC version: for those who play on a computer, the wait continues with no forecast.
If Rockstar delivers what it described, Leonida could be the most convincing open world the studio has ever built.
